Description
Bowmore’s founder David Simson is a true son of Islay; a man of vision and adventure whose proud legacy endures to this day. Born on the rugged island in 1742 to a large, religious family, his bold spirit saw him become a merchant and entrepreneur who invested his fortune in his beloved Hebridean home. David’s vision came to the fore after he was granted a plot of land by the Laird of Islay in 1766. With dreams of starting a distillery, he chose to buy rather than rent – ensuring his venture would always have a place to call home.
Nestling on the banks of Loch Indal, this new endeavour grew slowly in a new purpose-built village that David called Bogh Mor, or ‘Black Reef’, after a rocky outcrop lurking offshore. Some 13 years later, Islay’s first licensed distillery was registered on the same spot using the town’s anglicised name – and one of the most famous legends in whisky was born. Under David’s watchful eye, the town and distillery thrived thanks to its unique waterside location; A landmark at the heart of the community, with its precious cargo ferried to distant shores.
